Grêmio have reportedly denied Francis Amuzu permission to join the Ghana national football team ahead of their upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team.

According to reports from Brazilian journalist Filipe Duarte, the club was informed that the winger had been scheduled to report to Ghana’s training camp on Thursday, May 14, following his maiden invitation to the senior national team setup.

Grêmio, however, opted against releasing the player, reportedly pointing to the late timing of the national team request as well as a demanding run of fixtures in multiple competitions.

The Brazilian side are preparing for matches against Confiança, Bahia, Palestino and Santos in the coming days.

The decision comes as a major setback for Amuzu, who had been expected to make his first appearance for Ghana under newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Born in Ghana before relocating to Belgium during childhood, the winger previously represented Belgium at youth international level and for years remained undecided over his senior international future.

Amuzu had earlier declined a Black Stars invitation in 2022, maintaining at the time that he still hoped to represent Belgium at senior level.

The 26-year-old has since switched allegiance to Ghana and appeared set to begin his international career with the Black Stars before Grêmio’s decision halted those plans.

The friendly against Mexico is expected to play an important role in Ghana’s preparations toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the technical team continuing to assess players ahead of the competition in North America.
