“I will never advise anybody to become a coach in Ghana”- Kobby Mensah
Ghanaian coach Bismark Kobby Mensah has candidly expressed his frustrations about the challenges of coaching in the country, describing it as an extremely difficult and thankless job.
The former Black Galaxies assistant coach remarks sheds light on the systemic issues affecting the coaching profession in Ghana, sparking a broader conversation about the need for reforms to improve conditions for local coaches.
Speaking in an interview, Mensah revealed that coaching was never part of his original plans due to the numerous hurdles and sacrifices the profession demands in Ghana.
“I had no plans of becoming a coach. Coaching in Ghana is a very difficult job. If a player is hungry, you need to look for food for him. You don’t have a life as a coach; your only focus is to secure three points,” Mensah told Asempa FM.
He also highlighted the financial constraints associated with the profession and criticized the lack of respect and recognition for coaches, noting that they are often treated as mere formalities in the football setup.
“You can never have a lot of properties if you are a coach in Ghana. There is no respect for coaches. You are just there as a requirement. Kobby Mensah stated.
Given the challenges, the former Bechem United coach advised against pursuing coaching as a career in Ghana. “I will never advise anybody to become a coach in Ghana. It is one hell of a job,” he concluded.
