The road to the 2026 Democracy Youth Cup 2026 officially began on Monday following the successful conduct of the tournament draw at the La McDan AstroTurf Town Park.

The competition, designed to spotlight emerging football talents within the Greater Accra Region, will see 12 clubs compete for honours in a tournament that organizers believe will also help shape leadership qualities and civic awareness among young players.

Former Ghana Football Association vice president Fred Pappoe oversaw the draw ceremony, which attracted club officials and representatives from all participating teams. Also in attendance was former Sunderland A.F.C. defender Gary Bennett, who is expected to monitor players during the tournament as part of scouting activities.

The teams have been split into four groups of three:

  • Group One: Attram De Visser Soccer Academy, Kotoku Shining Stars, Desideros
  • Group Two: Cheetah FC, Charity Stars, Parin FC
  • Group Three: JP FC, Mighty Jets, Great Padua
  • Group Four: Kitu Stars, Stari Third World, Zilina FC

Group matches are scheduled to take place across Tuesday and Wednesday, with only the winners from each group progressing to the semi-final stage on Thursday.

Speaking after the draw, Pappoe stressed the value of the competition as a developmental opportunity for young footballers, especially with international scouts expected to observe matches throughout the event.

“It’s an interesting exposure, and I know there are quite a number of scouts who have indicated interest in the tournament, so they will be here,” Pappoe said.

“As you saw already at the preparatory meeting, there were some scouts from Sunderland FC and a few others who will be coming over the course of the tournament to look at the players and scout them.”

The tournament forms part of the wider Democracy Cup project introduced earlier this year by the Parliament of Ghana under the leadership of Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.

Organisers say the initiative aims to merge football development with civic education, social responsibility and youth empowerment.

The competition is expected to officially get underway with an opening ceremony on Tuesday before the first round of matches begins.
