Ghana Doubles Commonwealth Games Gold Medal Bonus to $10,000
Ghana’s athletes have been handed a major financial incentive ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the government significantly increasing the reward for winning gold medals.
Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams announced that gold medal winners will now receive $10,000, double the amount awarded at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
At the 2022 edition of the Games, Ghana offered $5,000 for a gold medal, $3,000 for silver and $2,000 for bronze. The revised package reflects the government’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence on the international stage.
“At the last Commonwealth Games, gold winners were to get $5,000, silver was $3,000 and bronze was $2,000,” Adams said.
The Sports Minister explained that the government had decided to substantially improve the incentive for athletes capable of reaching the top of the podium.
“We have decided to up the prize for any athlete who wins a gold medal to $10,000 and an added bonus from myself of $1,000,” he added.
The announcement comes as Team Ghana intensifies preparations for the Commonwealth Games, with several national teams currently in training camps as they aim to improve on the country’s performance at the previous edition.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be staged in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, bringing together thousands of athletes competing across multiple sporting disciplines.
