Alexander Djiku Calls for Black Stars to Reclaim Former Glory After World Cup Disappointment
Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has urged Ghana to set its sights on restoring the country’s reputation on the international stage, admitting he was frustrated by the team’s inability to progress beyond the group stage at previous major tournaments.
The experienced centre-back reflected on Ghana’s rich football history, noting that the Black Stars were once regular contenders in the latter stages of continental and global competitions.
According to Djiku, watching the national team struggle to match those achievements has been difficult, particularly given the standards set by previous generations.
“When I saw the Black Stars in the past, they always reached the semi-finals or finals. I was a little bit angry that we could not get past the group stage,” he said.
Despite his disappointment over past campaigns, Djiku believes the team must now focus on the future rather than dwell on previous setbacks.
“Now it’s far. We have to move forward and see what we can do in the next World Cup,” he added.
The defender’s comments come as Ghana begins planning for the next cycle of international competitions, with attention gradually shifting towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup and upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Djiku has been one of the Black Stars’ most dependable performers in recent years, playing a key role in the heart of Ghana’s defence and providing leadership both on and off the pitch.
