Black Stars winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has reflected on the memorable experience of receiving his maiden call-up to Ghana’s senior national team, describing the warm reception from his teammates as something he will never forget.

The Leicester City attacker, who has represented Ghana at every youth level before breaking into the senior side, said he immediately felt at home after joining the Black Stars camp for the first time.

According to Fatawu, the senior players made a conscious effort to help him settle into the squad by welcoming him with gifts and valuable advice.

“I felt lucky. Everyone welcomed me, gave me perfumes and new boots, and told me to enjoy myself, but be serious when it was time to play,” he said.

The 22-year-old explained that the encouragement from the experienced members of the squad boosted his confidence and made the transition to senior international football much easier.

Since making his debut, Fatawu has grown into an important member of the Black Stars setup, earning praise for his direct attacking play, creativity and work ethic.

Having previously starred for Ghana’s youth national teams, the winger has continued his development at club level while becoming a regular feature for the senior national team.

His comments highlight the welcoming culture within the Black Stars camp, where established players continue to mentor and support younger teammates as they make the step up to international football.

Fatawu is currently part of Ghana’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars have reached the Round of 32 and are preparing for a knockout clash against Colombia in Kansas City.
