Desmond Ofei to Lead Black Stars Against Mexico as Carlos Queiroz Misses Friendly
Ghana Football Association has confirmed that assistant coach Desmond Ofei will take charge of the Black Stars for Friday’s international friendly against Mexico national football team in Puebla.
The decision follows the absence of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who is unavailable for the match due to personal reasons.
Ofei, who has supervised training sessions and preparations since the team arrived in Mexico, will now step into the main role for the high-profile encounter as Ghana continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an official statement released on Friday morning, the GFA outlined the temporary changes to the technical setup.
“Assistant Coach Desmond Ofei will lead the Black Stars in Friday’s international friendly against Mexico in Puebla, following the absence of Head Coach Carlos Queiroz due to personal reasons.
“Ofei, who has supervised the team’s preparations since arrival in Mexico, will be assisted by goalkeepers’ trainer Daniel Gaspar and set-piece coach/video analyst Gregory De Grauwe,” the statement said.
The Mexico friendly forms an important part of Ghana’s final preparations ahead of the World Cup in North America.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
Friday’s match is also expected to help the technical team make final assessments before naming Ghana’s 26-man squad for the tournament, which begins on June 11.
