Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Croatia in their final Group L fixture at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Carlos Queiroz’s side went into Saturday’s contest with qualification already secured, while Croatia required all three points to keep their hopes of progressing alive. Although the Europeans emerged victorious, Ghana’s earlier results in the group proved sufficient to send the Black Stars into the knockout rounds.
Croatia made the brighter start and almost found the breakthrough midway through the first half when Nikola Vlašić unleashed a fierce strike from outside the area. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was beaten, but the effort cannoned off the woodwork to spare Ghana.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 31st minute. Mateo Kovačić threaded an incisive pass into the path of Petar Sučić, who calmly slotted a low finish beyond Asare to hand Croatia a deserved lead.
Ghana struggled to create meaningful openings during much of the first hour, but Queiroz’s changes injected fresh energy into the side as the match wore on.
The Black Stars were rewarded in the 73rd minute when debutant Derrick Luckassen announced himself in spectacular fashion. After a dangerous set-piece caused problems inside the Croatian penalty area, Ernest Nuamah kept the move alive with a precise delivery, allowing Luckassen to finish from close range and restore parity.
The equaliser lifted Ghana’s confidence, but Croatia responded with greater urgency as they chased the victory required to remain in the tournament.
With seven minutes remaining, veteran captain Luka Modrić produced another moment of quality, delivering a pinpoint corner that was met by Vlašić, whose powerful header beat Asare to restore Croatia’s advantage.
Ghana threw numbers forward in the closing minutes in search of another equaliser but could not breach the Croatian defence as the match ended 2-1.
Despite the defeat, the Black Stars’ earlier 1-0 victory over Panama and hard-earned goalless draw against England ensured they progressed to the Round of 32.
While Croatia celebrated a crucial win that kept their World Cup hopes alive, Ghana also had cause for celebration as Queiroz’s men extended their tournament journey and now turn their attention to the knockout phase, where they will aim to build on an encouraging group-stage campaign.
