Ghanaian Olympic sprinter Benjamin Azamati has brought attention to the difficulties faced by athletes in the country, pointing out that many are forced to balance jobs with rigorous training schedules, which hinders their ability to achieve peak performance.

The sprinter’s statement sheds light on an issue within Ghana’s sports ecosystem, where limited resources compel athletes to prioritize survival over training. This situation is different with the experiences of athletes from countries with sports funding and sponsorship programs.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, Azamati emphasized how the lack of sufficient financial and institutional support creates an uphill battle for athletes aiming to excel on the international stage.

“Most of Ghana’s athletes have to find jobs and work alongside training, and that does not allow them to achieve peak performance during events,” he said.

Azamati, who has represented Ghana at numerous international competitions, including the Olympics and the World Championships, is a key figure in advocating for better support systems for athletes.

With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games still fresh in the memories of Ghanaians, Azamati’s words serve as a reminder of the need to invest in the country’s athletes.
