Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo displayed remarkable resilience and character on Friday night, scoring twice for Bournemouth against Liverpool just moments after being racially abused by a fan during the Premier League opener.

The incident occurred midway through the first half when Semenyo was targeted while preparing to take a throw-in. Instead of losing focus, the 24-year-old Black Stars striker responded in the best possible way — with goals.

Liverpool had seized control of the game at Anfield, with new signing Hugo Ekitike breaking the deadlock in the 37th minute after pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Cody Gakpo then doubled the Reds’ lead in the 49th minute with a fine strike from the edge of the area.

Bournemouth’s fightback began in the 64th minute when Semenyo was quickest to react to a rebound inside the penalty area, calmly slotting home to halve the deficit. The Ghanaian international struck again 12 minutes later, unleashing a stunning drive from the edge of the box to draw his side level.

Despite Semenyo’s heroics, Bournemouth were denied a share of the spoils as Liverpool rallied late. Federico Chiesa restored the Reds’ advantage in the 88th minute before Mohamed Salah sealed the 4-2 victory in stoppage time.

Semenyo’s brace, however, stood out as a testament to his mental strength and professionalism, turning an ugly moment of abuse into an inspiring performance on the Premier League’s opening night.
