Ghana and England will square off in a pivotal Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both nations aware that victory could guarantee progression to the Round of 32 with one match remaining.

The Three Lions enter the contest in high spirits after producing an impressive attacking display to defeat Croatia 4-2 in their tournament opener in Texas. Goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford helped Thomas Tuchel’s side collect all three points and take early control of the group.

Ghana also began their campaign with a win, although their route to success was considerably more difficult. The Black Stars required a 95th-minute strike from Caleb Yirenkyi to edge past Panama and claim a valuable three points.

While the performance left room for improvement, Carlos Queiroz’s men remain well-positioned in the race for qualification.

The experienced Portuguese coach, appearing at his fifth consecutive World Cup, has built a disciplined side capable of frustrating stronger opponents.
A major weapon for Ghana is forward Antoine Semenyo, who enjoyed an outstanding club season, scoring 17 Premier League goals. Queiroz will be hoping the striker can translate that form onto the international stage against one of the tournament favourites.

The two nations have met only once before, drawing 1-1 in an international friendly at Wembley in 2011.

England arrive with an impressive record, having won each of their last 10 competitive internationals. Kane remains a key figure after scoring in four of his previous five appearances for his country.

Team selection could play a significant role as Rashford has been dealing with hamstring discomfort, while Bukayo Saka is also struggling for full fitness. As a result, Noni Madueke is expected to retain his place on the right flank, while Marc Guehi could be introduced in defence.

For Ghana, Thomas Partey returns after missing the opening victory and is expected to strengthen the midfield. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi has been ruled out through injury, opening the door for Benjamin Asare to start between the posts.

Brandon Thomas-Asante is also pushing for a place in the starting line-up after providing the assist for Yirenkyi’s winner from the bench.

Ghana`s Head Coach Carlos Queiroz revealed that he expects his starting lineup to show energy, commitment and a strong desire to secure the result required to strengthen Ghana’s position in the group.

“I have full confidence that the starting lineup will be strong, enthusiastic, with a lot of motivation to get the results that we need to move forward,”

Speaking ahead of the showdown, Tuchel praised the quality within the Ghana squad and highlighted the challenge awaiting his players against one of Africa’s most successful football nations.

“It’s bad news for Ghana because we will be very motivated,” the England boss said.

The former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain manager pointed to the competitiveness of Group L, describing it as one of the toughest sections in the tournament.

Tuchel also underlined Ghana’s long-standing reputation in world football, noting the strength and talent available to the Black Stars.

“We are playing in one of the most difficult groups, and Ghana is a traditional top football country with outstanding players,” he added.

Tuchel will once again look to the creativity of Bellingham and the finishing ability of Kane to break down a stubborn Ghanaian defence. However, the Black Stars have already shown they possess the organisation, resilience and counter-attacking threat needed to trouble elite opposition.
With qualification potentially on the line, both teams know the stakes could hardly be higher.
