Michael Essien Backs Semenyo to Trouble England in World Cup Showdown
Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has identified Antoine Semenyo as the Black Stars player most likely to cause problems for England when the two sides meet in their crucial Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Semenyo heads into Tuesday’s encounter in excellent form after producing an influential display in Ghana’s opening 1-0 victory over Panama. The forward’s energetic performance earned him the Man of the Match award as the Black Stars secured a dramatic win in Toronto.
Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show ahead of the highly anticipated fixture at Gillette Stadium, Essien singled out the Manchester City attacker as Ghana’s biggest offensive weapon.
“England will be more worried about Antoine Semenyo,” Essien said.
The former Chelsea and Ghana star believes Semenyo’s pace, power and direct style make him a dangerous opponent for any defence, particularly on the World Cup stage.
Essien also praised the 25-year-old for adapting quickly following his January move to Manchester City, noting that many players often require time to settle after a mid-season transfer.
“His journey has been very good so far. But what surprises me a little bit is you know, when players switch in January transfer, it takes them a while to adjust to their teammates in the system, but he looks like he’s already been there,” he added.
Semenyo has enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign and has become one of Ghana’s most important attacking players under head coach Carlos Queiroz.
