Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen believes his side has the quality and confidence to secure a positive result against Ghana as both nations prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey.
The Central American outfit arrived in Toronto on Tuesday after wrapping up their final training sessions at their base in Nottawasaga, with attention now firmly focused on Wednesday’s Group L showdown against the Black Stars.
Addressing the media ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Christiansen acknowledged Ghana’s pedigree on the international stage and the experience within the Black Stars camp.
“We have a lot of respect for Ghana,” Christiansen said. “They are a team with experience in World Cups. They have a new coach who hasn’t been in charge for very long, but that World Cup experience he possesses can help him convey important information to his players.”
While recognising the challenge ahead, the Panama boss remains convinced his players are capable of making a strong statement in their tournament opener.
“The United States, Mexico and Canada have responded well. We also want to make our mark,” he stated.
“We know it will be a difficult match, but the team is in great shape, full of enthusiasm and confident that we can win.”
Christiansen also paid tribute to the passionate support Panama has received since arriving in Canada, revealing that the backing from fans has provided an additional boost ahead of the crucial fixture.
“We extend our special thanks to all the fans who support their national team, both in Panama and abroad,” he said.
“It has taken a significant investment of time and money to be here. Seeing the stadium filled with Panamanians tomorrow fills us with pride and will be a vital support throughout the match.”
Panama are appearing at just their second FIFA World Cup and will be eager to improve on their debut campaign in 2018. A positive result against Ghana would significantly strengthen their hopes of advancing from a challenging Group L that also features England and Croatia.
For Christiansen and his players, the objective is clear: start the tournament strongly and prove they belong among football’s elite on the biggest stage.
