President of Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, has issued a passionate appeal to the Government of Ghana  to prioritize and increase financial support for Ghanaian athletes, especially as preparations intensify for the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.

Fuseini, who was recently honoured as Best African President in Athletics and also named SWAG President of the Year, made the call during an interview on Starr FM’s Sports Digest with Benjamin Yamoah.

“As a federation and as a state, we must support the athletes financially now that they are performing well. If not, we will have ourselves to blame when things go wrong,” he cautioned.

The Athletics President emphasized the need for a more balanced approach in state support across sporting disciplines, particularly urging the government to extend the same level of investment and commitment shown to football to other sports such as athletics.

Fuseini noted that Ghana’s current crop of athletes have shown tremendous potential, and timely financial backing would play a vital role in helping them achieve global success at the upcoming world championship.

Speaking on the repeated baton exchange issues that have negatively impacted Ghana’s relay teams in recent international meets, Bawah Fuseini pointed to a lack of training time and logistical challenges.

His comments come amid growing concern about Ghana’s recurring struggles with baton exchanges, particularly in the 4x100m relay, where technical errors have led to disqualifications or sub-par performances in key events.

Ghana is set to compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay events at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo this September. The nation remains hopeful of securing a medal, buoyed by recent promising performances from its elite athletes.
