Sports Minister Kofi Adams Raises Concerns Over Otto Addo’s Retention as Black Stars Coach
Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has voiced his concerns over the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Otto Addo, a former talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, faced widespread criticism following Ghana’s disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign, where the team failed to secure a single victory. Many fans and analysts called for his dismissal, but the GFA opted to keep him while making adjustments to his technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Kofi Adams disclosed that he directly addressed the matter with the GFA leadership and Black Stars technical team during a recent meeting.
“The FA brought the coach [Otto Addo] and other technical team members to introduce them to me, and at that meeting, I raised all those issues about their decision to keep the coach despite his failure to qualify for AFCON,” he revealed.
“They [GFA] gave me an answer. Am I satisfied? Time will tell. But I had my concerns, and I registered them clearly at the meeting,” Adams added.
Despite his concerns, Kofi Adams admitted that the timing of the World Cup qualifiers made it impractical to make a coaching change before the upcoming matches.
“At the time I became the Minister, we were too close to these [World Cup 2026] qualifiers [against Chad and Madagascar], and so the issue of changes should not be on the table. That should be the last thing on the table,” he explained.
The Black Stars will return to action in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, starting with a home game against Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
