President Mahama Unveils Plan to Transform Ho Stadium into Modern Multi-Purpose Sports Complex
President John Dramani Mahama has revealed an ambitious plan to redevelop the Ho Sports Stadium into a state-of-the-art multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex as part of the government’s drive to improve sporting infrastructure across Ghana.
The announcement was made during the President’s inspection tour of the facility in the Volta Region, where he outlined a long-term vision to increase the number of stadiums that meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
According to Mahama, the government’s objective is to ensure that at least five stadiums across the country are capable of hosting major CAF competitions in the years ahead.
He stressed that the current approach to managing sports facilities is no longer viable, pointing out that many stadiums remain dormant whenever football matches are not being played.
“The problem we have with most stadia is that when we are not playing soccer, we are not doing anything else with the stadium,” the President said.
Mahama disclosed that funding for the project will be made available once the design phase is completed, after which construction will officially begin with a sod-cutting ceremony.
The proposed redevelopment will include a modern natural grass playing surface equipped with a computerised irrigation system aimed at improving pitch quality, reducing maintenance costs and ensuring year-round usability.
In addition to football facilities, the upgraded stadium will feature commercial and entertainment infrastructure designed to host concerts, conferences, exhibitions and other large-scale public events.
The President believes these additions will create sustainable revenue streams while ensuring the facility remains active beyond sporting activities.
Mahama described the Ho Stadium redevelopment as one of the flagship projects under the government’s broader agenda to modernise sports infrastructure nationwide.
He also reiterated the need to decentralise major sporting events by developing quality venues across different regions instead of relying primarily on Accra and Kumasi.
Although Ghana successfully hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, only a limited number of stadiums currently satisfy CAF’s infrastructure requirements.
The planned redevelopment of the Ho Sports Stadium is expected to play a significant role in expanding Ghana’s capacity to host continental competitions while promoting sports, tourism and economic activity in the Volta Region.
