President John Dramani Mahama believes the Black Stars are on the verge of major success and has urged that head coach Carlos Queiroz be retained, expressing confidence that Ghana can win either the Africa Cup of Nations or the FIFA World Cup under the Portuguese tactician.

Queiroz was appointed in April on a four-month contract to guide Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his current deal set to expire at the end of July.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the Ho Sports Stadium on Friday, President Mahama praised the progress made by the national team and argued that continuity in the technical setup could elevate Ghana into genuine title contenders.

The President noted that many observers had written off the Black Stars before the tournament, with some predicting they would fail to progress beyond the group stage.

Instead, Ghana exceeded expectations by reaching the newly introduced Round of 32 under Queiroz’s leadership, a performance Mahama believes provides a strong foundation for future success.

According to him, maintaining the current squad and technical team would give Ghana a realistic opportunity to challenge for the biggest honours in international football.

“I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions,” Mahama said.

The Black Stars began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw, extending Ghana’s impressive record in second group-stage matches at the tournament.

Although Ghana advanced to the knockout phase, defeats to Croatia in their final group match and Colombia in the Round of 32 brought their campaign to an end.

Despite the elimination, Mahama believes the performances demonstrated the team’s growing potential and reinforced the importance of stability rather than another coaching change.
