President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to ensure that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) maintains full transparency regarding its budget for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, the President stressed that the public must be informed about how government funds are allocated to national teams.

“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams,” President Mahama declared. “The budget presented by the FA and other sports associations must be known by the public.”

His remarks come amid long-standing concerns about financial accountability within Ghanaian football, where questions have been raised regarding the management of funds allocated to the Black Stars and other national teams.

The President made it clear that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will play a proactive role in monitoring and ensuring that funds are used appropriately.

“I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable to the people of Ghana as we prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers,” he stated.

With Ghana aiming for a successful World Cup qualification campaign, the government’s emphasis on transparency and financial discipline is expected to boost public confidence and ensure that resources are utilized efficiently.
