Legon Cities Hit with Transfer Ban over GHC 29,000 Debt to Former Player

Legon Cities FC has been officially sanctioned with a transfer ban by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the club’s prolonged failure to settle an outstanding payment of GHC 29,000 owed to former player Francis Nuer Addo.

The unpaid sum, which dates back to October 2021, has been at the centre of multiple enforcement efforts by the GFA’s Players’ Status Committee. Despite the club being granted an extended payment schedule, it defaulted on all three final deadlines set for December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025.

In accordance with Article 15 of the GFA Disciplinary Code, the club was previously fined GHC 5,000 and cautioned of severe sanctions, including a transfer ban and potential point deductions, should they fail to comply.

The GFA has now enforced the transfer ban for the 2025/26 season, effectively prohibiting Legon Cities from registering any new players both domestically and internationally. However, the expected deduction of points for matches played after the final payment deadline in February 2025 was not applied — a decision that has sparked criticism.

The fallout comes at a turbulent time for Legon Cities, who were relegated to Ghana’s Division One League at the end of the 2024/25 season. The transfer ban now further complicates their rebuilding process, as the club seeks to regain top-flight status under tightened financial and regulatory scrutiny.
