Former Ghana national football team star Nii Odartey Lamptey believes the Black Starlets have the quality to recover strongly at the ongoing U-17 Africa Cup of Nations despite surrendering a two-goal advantage in their opening fixture against Algeria national under-17 football team.

Ghana opened their Group D campaign with an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Mohammed VI Football Academy after a match that produced two contrasting halves.

The Black Starlets made a blistering start and appeared to be cruising toward victory before halftime following goals from Gavi Robihno and Eric Adu Gyamfi.

However, Algeria fought back strongly after the interval and scored twice before the 70th minute to erase Ghana’s lead and bring the contest level.

The North Africans later earned a penalty that could have completed the comeback, but the opportunity was missed as the spot kick was fired wide, allowing Ghana to hold on for a point.

Reacting to the result during an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Lamptey expressed confidence in the team’s ability to improve as the tournament progresses.

“The Black Starlets will bounce back from this disappointing result. We have a good team, and I am confident we will do well,” he said.

Elsewhere in Group D, South Africa national under-17 football team moved to the top of the standings after defeating defending champions Senegal national under-17 football team in the group’s other opening match.

The Black Starlets will now prepare for a crucial encounter against Senegal on Sunday, May 17, with Ghana targeting their first victory of the tournament as the race for qualification intensifies.
