Kurt Okraku Rallies Nation Behind Black Queens Ahead of WAFCON 2026 Opener
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has called on Ghanaians across the globe to unite in support of the Black Queens as they begin their quest for a maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
The Black Queens will open their Group D campaign against tournament newcomers Cape Verde on Wednesday, July 29, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with hopes of making a strong start to their continental challenge.
Ahead of the tournament opener, Okraku delivered a passionate message urging fans, the media and all stakeholders to throw their full support behind the national women’s team.
“As our beloved Black Queens prepare to compete at the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, I call on all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, to unite behind this outstanding team as they proudly represent our nation.”
The GFA President expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level, pointing to their bronze-medal finish at the previous edition of the competition as evidence of their progress.
“The Black Queens head into the tournament with renewed confidence and ambition following their impressive bronze-medal finish at the last edition.”
He believes the tournament presents Ghana with an opportunity not only to challenge for the continental crown but also to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“They now have an opportunity not only to challenge for continental honours but also to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and return Ghana to the pinnacle of women’s football.”
Okraku further appealed for unwavering support throughout the competition, stressing that the players deserve encouragement for their dedication and sacrifices.
“I urge all Ghanaians—our supporters, the media, corporate partners and every stakeholder—to stand firmly behind the team with unwavering encouragement and belief. Let us celebrate their commitment, appreciate their sacrifices and inspire them throughout their journey.”
He ended his message with words of motivation directed at the players.
“To the Black Queens, the entire nation is behind you. Play with courage, pride and determination, and go out there to make Ghana proud.”
After facing Cape Verde, Ghana will continue its Group D fixtures against Cameroon on August 2 before concluding the group stage against Mali on August 6.
