The Ghana Olympic Committee has officially announced that the prestigious King’s Baton Relay will arrive in Ghana on August 8, 2025, as part of the countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The King’s Baton Relay is a symbolic event that embodies unity and friendly competition among the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. It also serves as a powerful platform to advocate for environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on reducing plastic pollution in marine ecosystems.

This year’s edition introduces a unique format: each participating nation will receive a baton to customize and decorate, showcasing their cultural heritage. Ghana’s participation in the relay is seen as an affirmation of the country’s commitment to sports, cultural expression, and environmental responsibility.

As part of the commemorative activities, Ghana will mark the event with a series of programs on August 8, 9, and 12. These include plastic clean-up campaigns, cultural celebrations, student and community engagement events, and visits to traditional leaders and dignitaries. The celebrations will also involve His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, former President of Ghana.

“We are excited to participate in the King’s Baton Relay and contribute to the global effort in reducing plastic pollution and imbibing the Commonwealth values in the Ghanaian and young athletes,” said Richard Akpokavie Esq., President of Commonwealth Sports-Ghana.

He added, “This event is an opportunity for us to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and promote environmental sustainability.”

The arrival of the baton signals Ghana’s active role in building momentum toward the 2026 Games while reaffirming its dedication to global sustainability goals and youth development through sport.
