Legon Cities Relegated from Ghana Premier League After Crushing Defeat to Nations FC

Legon Cities have officially been relegated from the Ghana Premier League following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Nations FC on Monday at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.

The loss sealed their fate with just three matches remaining in the 2024/25 season, as the Royals sit on an unassailable 25 points after 31 rounds—well below the survival threshold.

Nations FC, on the other hand, produced a dominant display to climb to the summit of the league table.

The result marks a disappointing end to Legon Cities’ Premier League campaign. Once crowned league champions in 2016 under their former identity, Wa All Stars, the club had rebranded in December 2019 after being acquired and relocated to Accra.

Despite promising investments and headline signings, including former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, the club struggled for consistency and has now suffered relegation.

Founded in 2006 with the support of then Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi, the club rose quickly to prominence, securing the top-flight title within a decade. However, their fall from grace has been steep in recent seasons.

Legon Cities will now prepare for life in the Division One League next season, with much soul-searching needed as they plan a route back to top-flight football.
