Kim Lars Björkegren Appointed Head Coach of Black Queens

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced Swedish football coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new Head Coach of the Senior National Female Team, the Black Queens.

Björkegren replaces Nora Hauptle, whose contract with the GFA ended in December 2024.

Kim Lars Björkegren, a UEFA License A coach, brings 18 years of extensive coaching experience. His career highlights include:

  • Domestic Titles: Winning the Cyprus Women’s League with Apollon Ladies and the Damallsvenskan (Swedish Women’s League) with Linköpings FC.
  • Coach of the Season: Named the best coach in Cyprus during the 2020–2021 season.
  • Global Success: Jointly holds a record with Sven Goran Eriksson as the second Swedish manager to win domestic titles in two different countries.
  • National Team Expertise: Worked as a Scout and Analyst for the Finland Women’s National Team.
  • Club Management: Managed Beijing BG Phoenix in the Chinese Super League, where his team achieved third place in both the Chinese Women’s FA Cup and Super Cup in 2018. He also served as Technical Director for Manila Digger FC in the Philippines.
  • Most Recent Role: Head Coach of Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.

Björkegren is known for his philosophy of playing purposeful, attacking, and entertaining football. His approach emphasizes: Possession-based play, Team discipline and organization, Flexibility and adaptability to leverage player strengths, Hard work, teamwork, and dynamism.

His methods align closely with Ghana’s football philosophy, making him a strong fit for the Black Queens according to GFA.

The Swedish tactician is set to begin preparations for upcoming international assignments, aiming to restore the Black Queens’ reputation as one of Africa’s most competitive female football teams.
