The Chinese Professional Football League has imposed a US$70,000 fine on Chengdu Rongcheng FC following the racial abuse suffered by Ghanaian forward Frank Acheampong during a league encounter with Henan FC.

Acheampong, 32, was subjected to derogatory chants and behaviour from sections of the Chengdu supporters, prompting swift disciplinary action. Reports indicate that two individuals were arrested after the match and placed in administrative detention, which can last up to 20 days.

According to The Global Times, “The misconduct, captured on video and widely circulated on social media platforms, included ‘monkey-calls’ mocking the skin colour of visiting Henan FC’s Ghanaian player Frank Acheampong and repeated middle-finger gestures.”

The league’s Disciplinary Committee also ordered that part of the stadium be closed for one home game, reinforcing the message that discriminatory acts will be met with firm sanctions.

Acheampong has been one of Henan FC’s standout performers this season, playing 30 matches, scoring 14 goals, and contributing three assists. His efforts have helped the club maintain a mid-table position, currently sitting 10th in the Chinese Super League.

The incident has reignited concerns over racism in football, with growing calls for stronger measures to protect players and promote a more inclusive sporting environment.
