Ghana Pulls Out of hosting 2026 African Swimming Championships Amid Governance Crisis
Ghana Swimming Association has officially announced Ghana’s withdrawal from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships, pointing to unresolved governance issues and insufficient institutional backing.
The decision, confirmed in a statement released on March 26, brings an abrupt end to months of preparation for the competition, which was scheduled to take place in Accra from May 5 to May 10.
According to the Association, the move was made only after multiple attempts to secure support from key stakeholders failed to yield results.
Central to the challenges were internal disputes that disrupted the federation’s operations, including the interruption of its Elective Congress in October 2025. The situation worsened when the National Sports Authority withdrew recognition of the Association over unresolved electoral concerns.
Efforts to resolve the impasse through discussions involving the Ministry of Sports and other parties did not produce a breakthrough, leaving organizers unable to meet key requirements ahead of the event.

One major setback was the inability to establish a Local Organising Committee, despite the tournament being just weeks away. This effectively halted planning and coordination for the championship.
The withdrawal comes despite significant international interest, with more than 40 countries having already confirmed participation and begun travel arrangements.
Ghana now faces potential sanctions, including a fine that could exceed $100,000 and the possibility of suspension from future international swimming competitions if the penalty is not settled.
Beyond the immediate consequences, the development raises broader concerns about the country’s readiness to host major sporting events and the future utilization of key facilities such as the Borteyman Aquatic Centre.
The Association expressed regret over the disruption caused to athletes, participating nations, and stakeholders, while reaffirming its commitment to resolving internal challenges and restoring confidence in the administration of swimming in Ghana.
