“Ghana Can Reach the Podium” – Kenya Athletics President Backs National Relay Team for Global Success
President of Athletics Kenya, Jackson Tuwei, has expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s 4x100m relay team, insisting the country possesses the quality needed to challenge for medals on the world stage.
His remarks come after Team Ghana secured qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships during the recent World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.
The Ghanaian quartet booked their spot on the second day of competition after missing out on a place in the final during the opening day’s events. Their response, however, proved enough to earn automatic qualification for the global championship.
Speaking in Accra following the World Athletics and Confederation of African Athletics Council meeting, Tuwei commended the progress and strength of Ghana’s sprint relay programme.
“[Ghana 4*100 relay team] has the potential to make the podium at the world level,” he said.
Tuwei further praised the country’s sprint talent and administrative organisation, highlighting Ghana as one of the continent’s leading relay nations.
“Ghana has one of the best relay teams in the world. You have got very good athletes, you have got very good sprinters, and you have got very good organization. Whenever we are here, I know even for this one, the organization is going to be top notch.
“And therefore, it is a matter of weighing to see what is possible, what is not possible. So I’m sure Ghana team will go to the highest level everywhere in the world.”
The Ghanaian relay team is expected to return to action this week during the 2026 Africa Senior Athletics Championships, where home supporters will once again have the chance to witness the nation’s sprint stars compete on a major stage.
