George Afriyie Urges Caution as GFA Begins Search for New Black Stars Coach
Former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie has called for a measured approach in appointing a new head coach for the Black Stars, warning against making a rushed decision in the wake of recent developments.
The national team is currently without a coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo, a decision taken after consecutive defeats in international friendlies, including a 2-1 loss to Germany and a heavy 5-1 setback against Austria.
With the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway, Afriyie believes the urgency of the situation should not compromise the quality of the decision-making process. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, he emphasized the importance of strategic planning and consultation.
“There should be no rush to appoint a new coach,” he said.
“The FA must carry out broader consultations and appoint a good coach not just for the World Cup, but also for a long-term project beyond it,” he added.
His remarks highlight growing calls for the FA to look beyond short-term fixes and focus on building a sustainable technical direction for the national team.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars are expected to reconvene in May for another round of preparatory matches, where they will face Mexico before taking on Wales.
