Carlos Queiroz has officially ended his tenure as Black Stars head coach, confirming he will not extend his short-term contract following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The veteran Portuguese manager, who was appointed on a four-month deal ahead of the tournament, announced his departure with a heartfelt message, reflecting on his time with the national team and outlining his hopes for the future of Ghanaian football.

Looking back on the World Cup campaign, Queiroz said every challenge presents an opportunity to grow, regardless of the final outcome.

“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn.”

Although Ghana’s journey ended with a Round of 32 defeat to Colombia, Queiroz said he was proud of what the team achieved while admitting his ambitions always stretched further.

“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination – it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.”

The 73-year-old believes the next chapter for the Black Stars must be built on strong foundations away from the field of play, insisting that long-term success depends on creating the right structures to nurture Ghana’s football talent.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”

Queiroz also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association for placing their trust in him during a crucial period for the national team.

“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honor and privilege to serve the Country and the Black Stars.”

He reserved special praise for his coaching staff and players, thanking them for their professionalism and commitment throughout the World Cup.

“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team.”

The outgoing coach also acknowledged the unwavering support of Ghanaian fans, saying the squad had succeeded in restoring the Black Stars’ reputation on the global stage despite falling short of their ultimate objective.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”

Queiroz ended his farewell with a message of hope for the future.

“Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”

During his brief spell in charge, Queiroz guided Ghana to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2010, overseeing a disciplined and competitive campaign that rekindled optimism around the national team and laid a foundation for future success.
