Carlos Queiroz Sets Merit-Based Tone for Black Stars Selection
New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has made his stance on player selection clear, insisting that only quality—not location—will determine who earns a place in Ghana’s national team.
Addressing the media for the first time in a press conference in Accra, the Portuguese tactician dismissed any notion of preferential treatment, stressing that the national team remains a highly competitive space.
“A national team is a house without windows and doors. There are no shortcuts into it. Whether you play locally or abroad is irrelevant, what matters is quality. If local players show they are good enough, they will absolutely be included,” Queiroz stated.
His remarks signal a merit-driven approach as he begins his tenure, with the focus firmly on performance rather than reputation or geography.
The statement also serves as encouragement to players in the domestic league, reinforcing that strong displays at club level can earn them opportunities on the international stage.
Queiroz’s philosophy comes at a crucial period for Ghana, with preparations underway for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As competition for places intensifies, his message underscores a commitment to building a squad based on form, discipline, and consistency.
With upcoming friendlies expected to offer a platform for assessment, both home-based and foreign-based players will be under scrutiny as the new technical team shapes a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
