Carlos Queiroz names two home-based players in Black Stars pre-World Cup squad
Hearts of Oak goalkeepers Benjamin Asare and Solomon Agbasi are the only Ghana Premier League players included in Carlos Queiroz’s latest squad for the Black Stars’ World Cup preparation camp and friendly against Wales.
The Portuguese tactician announced a 28-man squad for the training camp in Cardiff as Ghana intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The limited presence of home-based players has sparked conversation among followers of the domestic league, many of whom expected more standout performers from the Ghana Premier League to receive opportunities ahead of the tournament.
With the final 26-man World Cup squad expected to be selected from the current group, the omission of most locally based players appears to have significantly reduced their chances of making the trip to North America.
Asare’s inclusion comes after an impressive rise within the national team setup. The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper during the World Cup qualifying campaign and has maintained his place under the new technical team.
His club teammate Agbasi also earned recognition following a series of strong performances for the Phobians during the domestic season.
The rest of the squad is heavily dominated by foreign-based players competing across Europe and other international leagues, underlining Queiroz’s preference for experience and exposure at the highest level as Ghana prepare for the global tournament.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Wales in Cardiff as part of their build-up to the World Cup, where Ghana will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
