Carlos Queiroz Labels Panama Clash a Must-Win
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has underlined the importance of Ghana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup fixture against Panama, describing the encounter as a must-win game for his side.
The experienced Portuguese tactician made the remarks as the Black Stars completed their final preparations ahead of Wednesday’s Group L showdown at BMO Field in Toronto.
With Ghana aiming to make a positive start in a group that also features England and Croatia, Queiroz stressed that success in football is ultimately measured by results and victories.
“It’s a must-win game [against Panama]. I don’t remember in my life any game I played that wasn’t a must-win,” Queiroz said.
The former Iran, Egypt and Colombia coach has been tasked with guiding Ghana through a difficult World Cup campaign after taking charge just months before the tournament.
Despite concerns over injuries, limited friendly matches and the absence of key midfielder Thomas Partey for the opener, Queiroz remains focused on ensuring the Black Stars begin the competition on the right note.
“Our value is based on results and the only medicine that works in football is to win,” he added.
The comments reflect the determination within the Ghana camp as the four-time African champions seek to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Ghana arrived in Toronto earlier this week after concluding a training camp in the United States, where Queiroz and his technical team worked extensively on fitness, tactical organization and team chemistry.
The Black Stars will face Panama in their opening fixture before taking on England and Croatia in their remaining Group L matches.
