Benjamin Azamati Finishes Seventh in Commonwealth Games 100m Final
Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati placed seventh in the men’s 100 metres final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, bringing his impressive run in the blue-riband event to an end.
Azamati, who reached the final after progressing as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers from the semi-finals, clocked 10.11 seconds in a fiercely contested race that featured some of the Commonwealth’s quickest athletes.
Although he was unable to secure a podium finish, the Ghanaian’s qualification for the final capped another strong showing on the international stage.
Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme delivered a sensational performance to capture the gold medal, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a blistering time of 9.83 seconds.
Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy claimed the silver medal, while Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi completed the podium with a bronze-medal finish.
Azamati’s performance continues his record of representing Ghana among the elite sprinters in major international championships, even though he narrowly missed out on adding another medal to his résumé.
With the men’s 100m now concluded, Team Ghana will turn its attention to the 200 metres, where the country’s sprint hopes remain alive.
Joseph Paul Amoah, James Dadzie and Mustapha Bokpin are all scheduled to compete on Wednesday, with the trio aiming to make a strong impression and keep Ghana in contention for medals on the track.
The athletics team will be hoping the experience gained in the 100m final will provide further motivation as they seek success in the longer sprint event during the remainder of the Commonwealth Games.
