Benjamin Asare Vows to Cement Black Stars Spot Ahead of Unity Cup
Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has expressed his determination to hold onto his place in the Black Stars as he prepares for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in the United Kingdom.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper, who was included in Ghana’s 23-man squad for the four-nation competition, is eager to stake his claim as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Switzerland-based Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
Asare made his senior debut during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Madagascar, impressing many with his composure and command in goal.
Speaking in an interview with Max TV ahead of the Unity Cup opener, Asare thanked Ghanaians for their support and underlined his readiness to seize the opportunity once again.
“I’m grateful to God, our supporters and all Ghanaians for their support,” Asare said. “It is not easy for a local player to get an invite to the Black Stars. Every match is a tough one for us, so we are always ready when we get a call-up.”
Reflecting on the responsibility of wearing the national jersey, Asare emphasized the importance of mental preparation and self-belief when representing the country at the highest level.
“We have to psyche ourselves up and prepare because anything can happen at any time. Since we have received a call-up, we have to be ready to represent and make Ghanaians proud,” he added.
The 2025 Unity Cup will feature Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Black Stars will begin their campaign with a high-profile semifinal against Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.
