Azamati Out, Amoah to Lead Ghana’s 4x100m Team at World Relays in China
Ghana’s sprint team will be without star sprinter and national 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, at next month’s World Athletics Relays in China, after the athlete opted out due to timing constraints.
Azamati, who was initially listed in the provisional squad, has decided not to join the team, citing scheduling issues that make it difficult for him to participate in the event.
In his absence, Joseph Paul Amoah—team captain for Ghana at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games—will lead a refreshed relay squad as they aim to secure qualification for the Olympics. Amoah brings experience and leadership to a group that blends youthful energy and returning talent.
Joining him are Ibrahim Fuseni and Barnabas Aggerh, both of whom impressed during their outing at the 2023 African Games. The team also sees the return of seasoned sprinter Sean Safo-Antwi, who missed the Paris Olympics due to injury, and Mustapha Bokpin, another emerging name on Ghana’s sprinting radar.
Notably absent from the final list are Abdul Rasheed Saminu and Isaac Botsio, two in-form sprinters who were unavailable due to academic commitments.
The Ghana Athletics Association will be banking on this revised team to deliver a strong showing in China and punch their ticket to Paris 2024 through the World Relays, which serve as a key Olympic qualifier.
With new faces stepping up and veterans returning, the squad remains optimistic despite the absence of Azamati, whose impact on Ghanaian sprinting remains profound.
