Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has expressed his satisfaction with the progress and steady improvement of his side at the ongoing 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana endured a tough start to the campaign with a 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa but responded positively by winning two matches and drawing one to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

On Saturday night, the Queens defeated Algeria in a tense penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Coach Bjorkegren highlighted the significance of steady growth in tournament football and praised the development of his team throughout the competition.

“I think it’s always important in a tournament that you are growing as a group. If you’re looking at the best teams in the tournaments, even if you look at the men’s football or World Cup or whatever it is, it’s maybe not the team that wins the first game with 5-0 or whatever it is that’s going to win the whole tournament,” the Ghana coach shared.

He added, “It’s the team that keeps growing and taking it step by step and you have players that are showing up that you maybe haven’t seen before. I think it’s amazing with this group how they are moving forward the whole time and players that are taking their chances. I’m happy to be a coach for this really great group of talented players.”

With their place in the semi-finals secured, Ghana will now turn their focus to a crucial encounter with hosts Morocco on Tuesday, July 22, as they continue their quest for continental glory.
