Ghanaian sprinter Saminu Abdul Rasheed has etched his name deeper into the nation’s athletics history by setting a new national record in the men’s 100m, clocking a blistering 9.84 seconds at the 2025 Last Chance Qualifier held at McEachern High School in Georgia.

The 27-year-old speedster continues his remarkable rise, having earlier this year broken Benjamin Azamati’s previous national mark. His latest performance not only betters his own record by 0.02 seconds but also cements his position as the fastest Ghanaian sprinter of all time.

In what was a thrilling sprint showdown, fellow countryman Mustapha Bokpin finished strongly in second place, clocking an impressive 10.09 seconds.

Saminu, who has already secured qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, will be looking to carry this red-hot form into the global competition. He will also aim to better his semifinal appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

With his 9.84-second finish, Saminu now stands as the joint third-fastest man in the world in 2025, behind only Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson (9.75s) and Oblique Seville (9.83s). His explosive performance continues to raise Ghana’s flag high on the global athletics stage.
