Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has issued a passionate rallying call to the Black Queens, urging them to restore Ghana’s dominance in African women’s football as the team gears up for the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Black Queens have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania. Ghana will open their campaign with a crucial encounter against South Africa on July 7—a rematch of their group-stage fixture in the 2018 edition.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, which runs from July 5 to July 26, Adams emphasized the national team’s duty to represent the country’s values and rekindle the glory that once made Ghana a continental powerhouse in women’s football.

“They are not just representing a team but embodying the hopes and dreams of a nation that values freedom, progress, and excellence. It’s time for Ghana to reclaim its rightful place at the top of African women’s football,” Adams stated.

Despite being one of the early trailblazers in African women’s football, Ghana’s recent track record in the WAFCON has been disappointing. The team has not advanced past the group stage since 2016 and has failed to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup since their last appearance in 2007. Currently ranked fifth on the continent, the Queens are aiming to defy the odds and reignite national pride.

With the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage, every match will be pivotal in Ghana’s quest for continental success. Head coach Kim Björkegren and his squad have been undergoing intensive preparations, including a series of warm-up matches, to fine-tune their strategy and build cohesion.
