Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko cut a frustrated figure after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Basake Holy Stars in Monday’s Ghana Premier League encounter at the TnA Stadium.

The Yellow and Mauves entered the Week 15 fixture knowing that victory would have lifted them to the summit of the table. Instead, a combination of wastefulness in front of goal and a missed penalty meant they had to dig deep late on to rescue a share of the points.

After the final whistle, Tanko did not hide his disappointment, admitting that his side had only themselves to blame for failing to secure maximum points.

“It’s very painful. I must say we squandered a lot of chances,” the Medeama coach said.

He added that the missed opportunities proved costly on a day when his team created enough openings to win comfortably.

“We had the chances that normally we have to score and we didn’t. It’s very painful, but we need to look at our next match. In the end, we have to be happy with the point.”

Despite the setback, Medeama remain firmly in the title race. The draw leaves them second on the table with 27 points, just one behind leaders Aduana FC, and they still have a game in hand that could yet swing the balance in their favour.

With the season finely poised, Tanko and his players will now turn their attention to the next fixture, determined to sharpen their finishing and keep their push for the league crown on track.
