Head coach of Ghana’s U-20 national team, Desmond Ofei, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to overcome DR Congo in their opening game at the 2025 TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Black Satellites, drawn in Group C, will begin their campaign on Friday, May 2, against the Congolese side. Group C also includes defending champions Senegal and the Central African Republic—making it one of the most competitive pools of the tournament.

Speaking to CAFOnline ahead of the opener, Coach Ofei emphasized that the team has conducted extensive research on their group opponents and is leaving no stone unturned in their tactical preparations.

“We’ve done extensive scouting. Senegal are the reigning champions for a reason — very well-organized and consistent. DR Congo and Central African Republic also bring different tactical profiles. We’ve studied each team closely and will prepare uniquely for every match,” Ofei stated.

The Ghana U-20 side has intensified training this week in Egypt after weeks of preparation back home. Under Coach Ofei and his technical team, the focus has been on sharpening both the team’s attacking efficiency and defensive structure.

A win in the opening game against DR Congo would provide the perfect start and set the tone for Ghana’s quest to add a fifth continental U-20 title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021.
