Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi will travel with Ghana’s delegation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as an emergency goalkeeping option, following a decision by head coach Carlos Queiroz to include the youngster in the wider squad setup.

Although Agbasi was not named among the Black Stars’ official three goalkeepers for the tournament, he has remained with the team since reporting to camp on May 25 and will continue to work alongside the squad throughout the competition.

Queiroz outlined the reasoning behind the move after unveiling his final squad, stressing the importance of being prepared for any unforeseen situation involving the goalkeeping department.

‘‘The goalkeeper department in a short tournament is very sensitive. When the World Cup starts, football stops. Nobody is training. If we need to replace a goalkeeper and call one who isn’t in good shape or ready to compete, it’s almost impossible. Keeping this fourth goalkeeper achieves two things.’’

The Portuguese coach explained that the arrangement is not only a precautionary measure but also an investment in the future of Ghanaian football.

‘‘First, it’s part of our development programme for Ghanaian goalkeepers. He’s young with fantastic qualities. We have eyes on the future. Second, it sustains our training and covers us for an eventual replacement. If we’re forced to make that decision — which I hope doesn’t happen — he’s ready. He’s ready to compete, to perform. That’s the key: you have to be ready.’’

Under FIFA regulations, teams can register additional goalkeepers outside their official tournament squad. Such players can serve as travelling reserves and may be called upon if a goalkeeper suffers a serious injury or illness during the competition.

The arrangement ensures that national teams have a match-ready replacement available without disrupting preparations or relying on a player who has not been training with the squad.

For Agbasi, the opportunity offers valuable exposure at the highest level of international football while allowing him to gain experience alongside some of Ghana’s most established players.

The Black Stars will conclude their preparations with an international friendly against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday evening before departing for the United States ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia as they seek to advance beyond the group stage and make another memorable impact on football’s biggest stage.
