General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has clarified that the proposal to extend the presidential term of office did not originate from the Association itself but was instead driven by member clubs and other congress constituents.

This follows the submission of a recommendation by the GFA’s Statute Review Committee to increase the presidential term limit from two to three terms. The proposal will be up for consideration during the Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress scheduled for August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

Addressing growing public speculation that the proposal was crafted to benefit the current GFA president, Kurt Okraku, as he eyes a potential third term, Prosper Harrison Addo sought to set the record straight in an interview on Asempa FM.

“The decision to extend the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential term in office was proposed by clubs, RAG leadership, and other bodies that are all members of congress,” he said.

The decision was not made by GFA, and this proposal to extend the mandate of the president was made three years ago,” he added.

The proposed amendment is one of several statutory reforms under review, with only two of them receiving provisional approval from FIFA thus far. The upcoming Congress will have the final say on whether or not to ratify the presidential term extension.

As the meeting date approaches, all eyes will be on Prampram, where the outcome of the vote could significantly shape the future of football governance in Ghana.
