President Mahama Urges Priority Recruitment of Athletes into Security Services
President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, has called on the Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, to give priority to sportsmen and women during recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
The directive came during a ceremony at the Jubilee House, where President Mahama received the Black Queens and officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in recognition of the team’s impressive bronze-medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for talented athletes, noting that structured support systems could help nurture players for future national team duties.
“I have asked the Minister of Interior to give priority to sports people when we do recruitment into the security services,” he stated.
He recalled how similar initiatives in the past significantly contributed to the growth and development of athletes by providing them with adequate training resources.
“In the past, when we brought sports people into the services, it gave them the opportunity and equipment and the facilities to train and improve themselves,” President Mahama said.
He further advocated for the revival of the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games to enhance inter-agency sports competition and talent identification.
“We must re-introduce the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) games and let the security services compete amongst themselves, and then Kurt (GFA Prez) and co will be standing there, watching and picking the talents and forming the national teams,” he added.
The President’s remarks came in the wake of the Black Queens’ historic achievement—their first WAFCON medal since 2016—marking a renewed era of recognition and support for women’s football in Ghana.
