President John Dramani Mahama has officially signed into law a set of legislative amendments repealing multiple contentious taxes, including the widely criticized Betting Tax.

The move fulfills the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to alleviating financial pressures on Ghanaians.

It follows Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s submission of eight tax-related bills to Parliament on March 13, 2025, aimed at revising or eliminating specific levies.

Among the abolished taxes is the Betting Tax, which imposed a 10% charge on gross gambling winnings and faced strong opposition from stakeholders in the gaming industry. Critics argued that the levy discouraged participation in legal betting markets while driving consumers toward unregulated platforms.

President Mahama’s decision marks the fulfillment of a key campaign promise from the 2024 elections, in which he pledged to repeal these taxes within his first 120 days in office.

By endorsing these legislative changes, his administration signals a shift in Ghana’s economic strategy—moving away from heavy taxation and instead prioritizing increased consumer spending power and business growth.
