President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Black Queens for their remarkable performance at the recently concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the team clinched the bronze medal, marking their best showing at the tournament since 2016.

The President, alongside Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang, hosted the team at the Jubilee House to celebrate their achievement and encourage them to aim even higher in the future.

“The Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang and myself, we are happy to receive you. We followed your game very keenly, especially Nana Jane, she was your chief supporter. Your style of play was, I mean, fantastic,” President Mahama said during the visit.

President Mahama expressed his admiration for the players, coaching staff, and the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), praising their commitment and determination throughout the tournament.

“It was just unfortunate that you came up against the host nation at a very critical time, and they were determined to win, you know, whatever happened. And playing against a home team, especially the host team, is not the easiest of things, but you held them throughout,” he stated.

The Black Queens narrowly missed out on a spot in the final after a tense penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco, but bounced back to defeat South Africa and secure third place.

Despite the setback, President Mahama expressed optimism about the future of the team.

“Your best days are still ahead of you,” he said.

He concluded by urging the team to build on the experience and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting women’s football and the national team moving forward.
