Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has revealed that his outfit has received no formal communication explaining why reconstruction works at the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium abruptly came to a halt.

The project, located in the Eastern Region, had been expected to transform the long-neglected stadium after years of deterioration. The redevelopment was initiated through the efforts of Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, raising hopes among residents and local sports enthusiasts.

However, despite early signs of progress, work on the facility stalled without public clarity on the cause.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Ampofo Ankrah explained that available documents do not provide any official reason for the interruption.

“Sometime in September 2020, the then Minister for Youth and Sports cut sod for the reconstruction of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium… and it was set to cost 27 million Ghana cedis. It was to be funded by the Middle Belt Development Authority,” he stated.

“The project, however, stalled along the line, and per documents or reports presented to me, there was no specific reason given,” he added.

The NSA Director-General further noted that the Authority has yet to receive any update on the project’s current status or a timeline for its resumption.

The halt has left many community members concerned, as the stadium was expected to boost sports development and serve as a major sporting hub for the region.
