National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has expressed serious concerns about the condition of the Accra Sports Stadium, warning that Ghana risks being unprepared to host the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations unless urgent renovation work begins.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah painted a worrying picture of the country’s national stadium, describing it as being in a deteriorated state that requires far more than routine maintenance.

According to him, the facility has reached a point where comprehensive rehabilitation is needed instead of cosmetic repairs.

“The Accra Sports Stadium is breaking up; I don’t think we can host the upcoming U20 AFCON unless we start work immediately. The stadium is in a terrible state,” he said.

The NSA boss stressed that the problems go beyond minor defects, insisting the venue’s structural condition demands immediate attention.

“The Accra Sports Stadium is broken up. It’s in a very terrible state. It’s not about tightening screws,” Ampofo Ankrah explained.

He noted that although the stadium has undergone renovations over the years, particularly whenever Ghana has hosted major tournaments, that approach has failed to provide a lasting solution.

“It’s a stadium that was built a couple of decades ago and we’ve had renovations, especially when there are tournaments and this is a cycle that has not worked,” he added.

The Accra Sports Stadium has hosted several major continental and international competitions over the years, but the latest assessment from the NSA suggests significant investment will be required to ensure it meets the standards expected for future tournaments.
