National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has defended the ongoing maintenance work at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after a viral video showing workers manually plucking weeds from the pitch sparked widespread debate on social media.

The footage, which attracted mixed reactions from football fans, led to questions about the methods being used to prepare one of Ghana’s premier sporting venues.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah insisted there was nothing unusual about the process, explaining that manually removing weeds forms part of the technical procedures required to improve the quality of the playing surface.

According to him, the ultimate objective is to restore the pitch to the highest possible standard, regardless of the method employed.

“I don’t have a problem with the method of plucking the weeds as long as we are going to get results,” he said.

The NSA Director-General stressed that the exercise is a legitimate aspect of pitch renovation and maintenance, adding that every decision being taken is aimed at ensuring the Baba Yara Stadium provides a safe and high-quality playing surface.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has undergone various rehabilitation works in recent months as the NSA continues efforts to restore the venue to an acceptable standard for domestic and international football matches.

The stadium remains one of Ghana’s most iconic football venues and is expected to play a key role in hosting major competitions once renovation works are completed.
