Newly elected president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has called for unity among the country’s sports federations, stressing that divisions are undermining the growth and progress of Ghanaian sports.

Akpokavie, a former Ghana hockey national team captain and respected sports administrator, defeated Michael Aggrey in Saturday’s election to succeed outgoing president Ben Nunoo Mensah. He will now lead the GOC for the next four years.

Speaking after his victory, Akpokavie emphasized the urgent need for federations to set aside differences and work collaboratively under the GOC umbrella.

“There are too many disputes among federations, too many divisions,” Akpokavie said.

“We need to work as one. We have one GOC team, several players, but one GOC team. We must focus on building that GOC team so that Ghanaians will support us.”

He further highlighted the negative impact that internal wrangling could have on efforts to attract corporate sponsorship and public support.

“Right now, if we are not united, we can’t approach any body, institution, or corporate entity to ask for money because they read all kinds of stories in the papers,” Akpokavie added.

Akpokavie’s election marks a new chapter for the GOC, with many stakeholders hoping his leadership will foster greater collaboration, transparency, and a stronger foundation for Ghana’s Olympic ambitions.

The sporting community now looks ahead with cautious optimism, as Akpokavie seeks to rally all federations towards a common goal: elevating Ghana’s standing on the international sports stage.
