Early Arias Strike Ends Ghana’s World Cup Dream as Colombia Advance
Ghana’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, with Jhon Arias’ first-half goal proving the difference in a tightly contested encounter.
The Black Stars began brightly and almost grabbed an early breakthrough. Midfielder Thomas Partey tried his luck from distance within the opening exchanges, but his powerful strike sailed just wide of the target.
The match, however, was soon disrupted by injury concerns at both ends. Colombia were forced into an early substitution after Jhon Córdoba picked up a groin injury, paving the way for Luis Suárez to enter the contest.
Ghana then suffered a setback of their own as Marvin Senaya, who initially attempted to shake off a hamstring problem, was unable to continue. Alidu Seidu replaced the right-back before the opening 15 minutes had elapsed.
The change proved decisive almost immediately. Suárez made an instant impact by delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Jhon Arias escaped his marker to guide a composed finish beyond Lawrence Ati Zigi in the 14th minute.
The goal gave Colombia control of the match, with the South Americans enjoying lengthy spells of possession while limiting Ghana’s attacking opportunities.
Luis Díaz came close to extending Colombia’s advantage before the interval, but his effort drifted wide. Ghana remained in the contest thanks to an outstanding save from Ati Zigi, who reacted brilliantly to tip away Johan Mojica’s powerful header from a Daniel Muñoz delivery.
After the restart, Ghana searched for a route back into the game. Antoine Semenyo produced the Black Stars’ most dangerous moment, driving into space before sending a low ball across the six-yard box, but no teammate arrived in time to convert.
Colombia continued to threaten on the counterattack. Díaz had a goal ruled out for offside before later forcing another excellent save from Ati Zigi after breaking through on goal.
Seeking an equaliser, coach Otto Addo refreshed his side by introducing Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu for Kwasi Sibo and Inaki Williams before later throwing on Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu in a bid to increase the attacking threat.
Despite the changes, Ghana struggled to create clear openings against a disciplined Colombian backline. At the other end, Davinson Sánchez headed comfortably at Ati Zigi, while substitute Juan Quintero narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort.
The Black Stars pressed forward during the closing stages but could not find a breakthrough as Colombia held firm to secure their place in the Round of 16.
Arias’ early strike ultimately proved enough to send the South Americans through, while Ghana bowed out of the tournament after a spirited World Cup campaign.
